The Interaction, XR and Human-Centred Digital Environments department studies how people engage with complex systems and information. Its work connects interaction design, multimedia, visualisation and immersive technologies with usability, accessibility, ergonomics and cognition.

Research and technical scope

  • Human-centred interfaces that make systems, data and processes understandable and useful.
  • Virtual, augmented and mixed reality for training, simulation, visualisation and spatial understanding.
  • Multimodal and intelligent interfaces combining visual, spatial, textual, audio or sensor-based information.
  • Collaborative digital environments, cooperative work and interfaces supporting cognition and informed decisions.
  • Digital twins, 3D visualisation and human-machine interaction for technical and operational information.

How we work

The department contributes through design-oriented research, prototyping, visualisation, interdisciplinary experimentation and collaborative projects. Work considers the relationship between users, tasks, data and context, including accessibility and the practical conditions in which an interface is used.

The aim is to make advanced digital environments more understandable, effective and inclusive. Connections with AI, industrial systems, education and geospatial applications help translate technical capability into useful experiences, improved decision quality and practical training.
