The Energy Systems and Sustainability department works on the digitalisation, monitoring, optimisation and resilience of energy systems. It combines renewable-generation knowledge with AI, sensing, geospatial information, digital platforms and secure data integration.
Research and technical scope
- Performance monitoring, operational analytics and intelligent control for energy infrastructure.
- Data-driven planning, demand optimisation and decision support.
- Resilience and continuity under technical, operational and environmental pressures.
- Sustainability assessment and practical pathways for the energy transition.
Community energy and local resilience
Community-energy work covers collective renewable self-consumption, energy sharing, storage assessment, electric-vehicle charging integration, energy forecasting and energy-literacy activities. Technical feasibility is considered alongside governance, member participation, local benefit and investment readiness, with particular relevance to inland and rural territories.
How we work
The department contributes through applied research, prototyping, pilot activities, data integration, analysis and interdisciplinary cooperation. Projects connect infrastructure and operational needs with reliable information flows, system integration and practical adoption.
As energy systems become more distributed and interconnected, the department focuses on the monitoring, analytics, security and decision-support capabilities needed for efficient and sustainable operation.
